I've got the weekend off this week and this morning my intention was to get up, let out and feed all the various livestock, and then head back to bed with a magazine and enjoy a lie in. Well it's now 5 hours later and I am still wandering around the house from job to job no nearer to heading back up the ladder.
Neil is working in London today on a bollywood set - breakfast for him was a jalfrezi wrap at 8am. He says he can't wait for lunch now. He is a complete asian food nut, fuelled by several backbacker trips in his younger days and loves the opportunity to sample authentic dishes.
The pigs seem to have settled in well, and are becoming much more animated and playful, much to Tess's amusement
What isn't amusing me is the return of the blasted flies - There I was thinking that the cold blast we had in winter had killed off the little buggers and that perhaps filling in several of the holes in our walls and floor had made a difference to the fly population in our house, but this morning there are loads of the little swines flying around the house.
Several people have different theories on reducing the fly population. Some keep all window and shutters closed, others keep them all open so they can go in and out at will. I did try hanging a little clear bag with some centimes in which is supposed to be a failsafe remedy but didn't seem to work at all. Has anyone got any other ideas.....
For the moment the horses are taking respite under the apple tree and I can't say I blame them.
Chosen land of Beelzebub, France...as shown by the number of his pet flies which infest it.
ReplyDeleteNo wonder there are so many spiders...
Because we also have velox windows there is quite a lot of light in our house. I close the shutters, and open the windows on the ordinary windows to let the air through. The flies seem to stay away and don't dive through the few small gaps. If I open a shutter than the house is buzzing in seconds!!!!!! Diane
ReplyDeleteI don't mind spiders though - if they keep the flies down they are welcome here and Diane - we haven't made the shutters yet but I will give it a try when we have!!
ReplyDeleteI was the same this morning - thought I would take it easy, but still fetched up bouncing from job to job. Glad piggies are settling down. Ours are both squeezed into one side of the wallow at the moment. As for the flies. Fly-swats. They work. We are also inundated with the things and I have tried various ways of dealing with them, but fly-swatting is the favourite way and one can get quite skilled eventually!
ReplyDeleteWe quite favour the fly swat method Vera - but Neil gets a bit manic with it and for some reason our collie, Tess is a bit of a sensitive soul and hates all the thwacking!!
ReplyDeleteLester also gets manic with the fly swat, and my two dogs usually go off somewhere else rather than be in the same room as him when he is in swatting mode. And I often get thwacked, mostly because the flies quite like to roost on me, especially when I can't do anything about it, such as when I am trying to do spinning (with our sheep wool)!
ReplyDeletewow! spinning wool - how's it going!
ReplyDeleteWool spinning going great, apart from the fact that I have worn my drop spindle out and have only managed to spin five balls of wool with it so far. Can't afford a proper spinning wheel yet, so Lester has superglued the drop spindle back together again. It may be workable tomorrow. Or not. Glue has stayed wet, possibly because of the lanolin in the wool. Ah well. Looking for a second hand spinning wheel at a silly price!
ReplyDeleteI will keep an eye out for one - not something you see every day though :( x
ReplyDeleteJust have a mammoth swatting session before you begin to cook a meal! We had a very bad fly patch a few weeks ago which lasted a week or so, but they haven't been so bad since then.... touch wood! I've tried suspending bags of water, and also growing the tansy plant to deter them, but nothing works. Now we just hang up fly papers - ugly though they are - and swat like crazy!
ReplyDeletetansy plant? I've not heard of that one, I'll have to google it even if it is inefficient!
ReplyDeleteHi Roz, I have all my cucumbers lined up ready to do your recipe, but 5 supermarkets later, not a mustard seed in sight. The only seed I can find is already in the mustard and I don't think this will be quite the same! Will have to look around for something else to do with them. Diane
ReplyDeleteDiane send me your address to rozahol@hotmail.com and I will send you some seeds xx
